ABOUT WHITEFOOT FARM
My name is Trisha Badger and I have been farming here at my home in rural Jefferson, Maine since 2008. In 2007 I enjoyed a year as a full-time apprentice with Tom Griffin at Hope's Edge Farm in Hope, Maine. That year gave me a wonderful start into this life as a vegetable farmer - and the time that I spend here on the farm continues to be a daily education in botany, biology, chemistry, astrology, ecology, and land stewardship among other things.
Whitefoot is a direct-market farm, meaning that I sell directly to my customers, which include restaurants, caterers, markets and schooners in the windjammer fleet. I also participate in the Union Farmers' Market each Friday from mid-May through mid-October. I follow the biodynamic calendar "Stella Natura" for planting, care and harvest, and I use a variety of green manure, cover crop and living mulches as well as compost and soil amendments to maintain strong soil health, high mineral content and vitality. While Whitefoot Farm is not USDA certified organic, I pledge never to use chemicals or synthetic sprays here on the farm.
Whitefoot Farm sits on five acres with 1.25 acres in cultivation. I grow more than 100 varieties of vegetables, herbs and fruit in a careful crop rotation on an old pasture that once housed horses and dairy cows.
We keep two hives of bees for pollination (and honey if we're lucky), between 15 and 20 laying hens, and approximately 60 broiler chickens each year.
